Happy Labor Day. There was a time when Labor Day actually celebrated the American worker. Now it’s all about making people work at Labor Day sales. Hopefully some of you proles are enjoying a well-earned day of rest.

Here’s an illustration of the first Labor Day parade in 1882 held in New York City, back when parades were a thing. There are some interesting signs in there.

ABOLISH CONVICT LABOR

AGITATE / EDUCATE / ORGANIZE

PAY NO RENT

LABOR CREATES ALL WEALTH

WHO STOLE THE TENEMENT HOUSE REFORM BILL ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! )

ALL MEN ARE BORN EQUAL

THE TRUE REMEDY IS ORGANISATION & THE BALLOT

LABOR PAYS ALL TAXES

Now go buy something.

I already bought a pack of cigarettes, is that enough?  I really don’t need a new mattress.

I’m not. Work started for me like 2 hours before labor day did, and won’t end until at least an hour after it’s over. Also I’m ill. But this is America and sickness is just a weakness corporations can use to strip you of employment. So, I’m not ill, actually! Don’t worry, I’ll just something something bootstraps something for a while until I’m successful and everything will be * fine!

*(nnnnope)

Nothing to do with labor day, but I find it interesting that the illustration is instantly recognizable as Union Square, despite the fact the park (including the equestrian statue of Washington) has been reconfigured, and every building you see there has been replaced.

I hate and loath Labor Day with a passion born of working in retail for years.

The only reason I’m enjoying any days off, is because I put my foot down and said “NO. CAR TIME. You will NOT call me. This is PTO, this is the only significant time off I have taken, YOU WILL NOT RUIN IT.”

“But sending you 20 messages on Slack isn’t calling you! You can take 5 minutes to answer them! And it’s just secondary on-call because so-and-so is so busy !”

Hey guess what got removed or hard muted on my phone.

I don’t have to work today, but I did put in 5 hours on Saturday. There’s n othing like getting up at 4 am on a weekend morning to drive 200 miles. That’s not a complaint, I love having the roads mostly to myself. Plus it was a nice sunrise.

I love being up early in the morning, I just hate getting up early in the morning.

Yep. Once I’m used to the idea of being awake, it’s all good.

I found out about the 4 am thing at 10:30 Friday night, so that was nice.

We had our Summer Bank Holiday last Monday (27th August), so as I work nights it was my Sunday night shift (as most of the hours are in the Monday morning) I had it off. Either get paid and not work it, or work and get time and a half rate and holiday top-up hours.

Ye’, I took the night off and drank on the companies time.

Thankfully we get eight Bank Holidays a year on top of our 28 days statutory paid Holiday Entitlement (pro rata) a year (a company can include the bank holidays in the holiday entitlement if they choose).
